WHO WE ARE

The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust (CWOT), is a small charity in Zambia. The CWOT is one of
the world’s largest and oldest chimpanzee sanctuaries, with 150 chimpanzees rescued from the illegal
bush meat/pet trade around the world. Along with our duty to rescue chimpanzees in need, CWOT
works to protect local Zambian wildlife with their rescue, rehabilitation and release into protected
areas. We support 70 families – more than 400 people, including 150 children. Every year we educate
and raise awareness of over 2,000 children and we have around 35 schools in the Copperbelt region
that come to visit CWOT to teach the next generation about protecting wildlife in Zambia.

ROLE DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

The Social Media Volunteer (SMV) will serve the needs of the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust
(CWOT), working closely with the SMO and ED to create engaging content for the NGO’s social media
presence, including updating social media channels and brand-targeting and looking for new social
media avenues and new ways to connect with audiences. The right person will be a creative and self-
starter, able to work in a team and extremely detail-oriented, with strong written and oral
communication skills. In 2023, CWOT celebrates its 40th anniversary and many campaigns will be
launched. The SMV will have to provide a lot of content on various projects to be able to feed the
social media and the 40th anniversary campaign

The duties of the SMV:

  • Help create and maintain an engaging social media plan
  • Use social media to promote the activities and achievements of CWOT, keeping our social
    media channels updated on a frequent basis
  • Reply and Interact with followers and community on social media
  • Ensure that communication reaches a wide range of local stakeholders and a diverse audience
  • Select relevant channels to reach our diverse audience and develop/manage content for our
    website and social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others
  • Take part in monthly remote meetings with communications committee members
  • Track the effectiveness of our social media work and recommend ways forward
  • Keep up to date with CWOT events and news, and choose what to promote through our social
    media feeds/channels
  • Stay current on topics important to CWOT work in order to share new information with our
    online community
  • Assist in creating and developing graphics and publicity materials for various campaigns and
    posts (asset)
  • Assist and support staff during fundraising campaigns, newsletters preparations or other
    events
  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times
  • Perform other duties related to this role as needed

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED

We are looking for a creative, motivated, enthusiastic individual who is eager to gain insight and
experience in the charity sector in biodiversity conservation and animal well-being. As CWOT, we
communicate with thousands of supporters: individuals, institutions, and local and international
organisations.

  • Marketing, Public Relations, Graphic Communications or enrollment in a program related to
    these specialities is an asset
  • Some background or education in marketing and communications and an understanding of
    social media trends
  • Intermediate/Advanced level experience with social media and digital marketing best practices
  • Proficient in Social Media (FB, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn), Google Suite, Microsoft Office,
    Adobe Acrobat, various document processing and database applications and querying;
  • Excellent knowledge of all Social Media platforms and support/aggregate software including
    Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Experience and technical knowledge managing databases and websites
  • Self-starter
  • Motivation and passion to participate in and help a wildlife conservation program;
  • Conversant in, and enthusiastic about, using social media platforms, ideally in a workplace;
  • Ability to sell a cause successfully and an appreciation of the communication needs of charity
    fundraising.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Experienced in graphic design and relevant software is an asset
  • Knowledge of a non-profit culture is preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal, editing and communication skills, in English
  • Excellent communication skills, to be articulate, with strong writing skills and the ability to
    feedback accurately
  • Ability to transform small snippets of information into interesting and engaging stories suitable
    for Instagram, Facebook etc
  •  Patient, positive attitude, hardworking, organized, reliable
  • The ability to work equally well in a team and unsupervised
  • Good understanding of confidentiality
